Marinara sauce is the perfect accompaniment to your favorite pasta dishes or as a flavorful base for recipes like ravioli, lasagna, meatballs, or zucchini roll-ups. This classic tomato sauce is typically made with tomatoes, garlic, herbs, and onions, and can be customized with additional ingredients like olives, spices, or a splash of wine, depending on personal preference.
My foolproof recipe for marinara sauce is a staple in my kitchen, often stored in the freezer for quick weekday meals. It's incredibly easy to make and far surpasses the flavor of store-bought pasta sauce. I typically prepare a large batch and store it in the freezer for convenience. With simple and readily available ingredients, this homemade marinara sauce can be refrigerated for up to 4 days or frozen for up to 6 months, ensuring you always have a delicious sauce on hand whenever you need it.

Ingredients
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1/3 cup finely chopped onions (preferably use white onions, it tastes better)
1 tbsp minced garlic
handful of fresh basil leaves
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
3/4 tsp ground black pepper
4 large fully ripe red tomatoes, finely chopped
1/2 tsp balsamic vinegar (optional)
1/2 tsp sugar (optional)
3/4 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp mixed italian herbs
1/2 tsp chilli flakes
Instructions
Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add onions, garlic, salt, and pepper. Stir and cook for 2-3 minutes until onions are translucent and fragrant.
Add the tomatoes, basil leaves, balsamic vinegar, sugar, oregano, and chili flakes. Cover and simmer over low heat for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and flavors meld together.
Once done, remove from heat and let cool slightly. Transfer the sauce to an airtight container for storage.
This marinara sauce can be refrigerated for up to 4 days or frozen for up to 6 months, ensuring you have a delicious sauce ready whenever you need it.
